English 2989H
The images above are representative of the topics each paper encouraged me to delve into. The first paper took a look at my literacy development from writing chicken scratch to my current writing, the second had me reflect upon a previous piece I had written called 'This I Believe', and the third made me consider all of the aspects that make up my personality, values and goals. In all three assignments, I looked at both my writing style and the contents to distinguish who I was during Freshman year of college and even farther back, and I compared that to my current writing and what that says about my current state of mind.
English 2989H: Literacy, Genre and Research
English 2989H was majorly a self-reflective course, which dealt with learning how to distinguish and become a part of academic discourse. We first analyzed our literacy style development. I looked at my relationship with my parents and how that developed my style of relating and communicating with others around me. This helped me decide that I was comfortable with whom I was, but it also allowed me to see where my weaknesses are and how to address them proactively. Second, we looked at a past writing assignment and analyzed how well we completed the assignment within our chosen discourse community. I quickly realized that I sometimes have difficulty understanding my audience and changing my writing style to reflect the purpose of an assignment. Third, we looked at downtown Cincinnati and analyzed the discourse communities surrounding an iconic person or place within our cherished city. This helped me realize what a rich city I was born in, but also challenged me to understand the audience and purpose of multiple discourse communities.
